World Refugee Day Spectacular
Filmmaking Volunteers Needed- Sunday 19th June 2011 - Bishop Lucy Park, Cork – from 2pm.
Monday the 20th June is designated UNHCR "World Refugee Day". To mark this important event, Cork city will host a wonderful celebration of our rich cultural diversity on Sunday the 19th June in Bishop Lucy Park from 2pm.
Everyone is welcome to share and enjoy this colourful and entertaining atmosphere which will be a feast of national costumes, tastes, sounds and art from many parts of the world, as well as a chance to learn more about the lives of refugees who seek a safe harbour in Cork. The spectacle of Sudanese and Togolese drumming groups, along with a performance from the African Women's Group, a specially-formed Children's Choir and the Cork Multicultural Choir will add to your Father's Day celebration, and there will be plenty of family and child-friendly entertainment.
This event is brought to you by an entirely voluntary group facilitated by Nasc, the Irish Immigrant Support Centre, and with the support of Cork City Council.
As well as the element of celebrating diversity and welcoming refugees to Cork, Nasc also wants to ensure that refugees here will have an opportunity to talk about the problems with the State's asylum system - there's a lot more information about that at www.nascireland.org/directprovision.
Filmmakers are sought to work together with an interviewer to record a short interview with a refugee talking about their experience... or maybe to come up with a creative approach of their own! Nasc will provide every credit we can to any filmmaker who can create something for Youtube.
If anyone would like to be involved, Nasc would love to hear from them!
