Acting for camera

Aspiring to the silver screen, but don't know where to start? Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of acting for camera, covering topics such as interpreting direction, acting techniques and relating to script and character.
Hugh O' Conor will help beginners develop their skills through group exercises with short scenes. With over 20 years experience in acting and directing, Hugh has appeared in films like The Three Musketeers (1993), Chocolat (2000), and Killing Bono (2011). He is also the director of three short films, including the award winning Corduroy (2009).
Writing For Screen Masterclass

This day-long screenwriting class introduces writers to techniques that shape their stories and invest them with dramatic tension. Visual storytelling will also be discussed, exploring how it enhances or can replace dialogue as a means of telling a story. The day will include an analysis of a classic Chaplin film, The Kid, to show how he used craft to connect with audiences and evoke an emotional involvement with his stories, as well as entertaining them.
Workshop leader Mary Kate O'Flanagan is award winning screenwriter and script consultant with international experience. She trained with Daniel Howard in the Frank Daniel methodology of Teaching Screenwriting, and has tutored on courses such as Writing Short Films That Get Funded, Writing and Rewriting a Short Film and the Screen Training Ireland/IADT Script Clinic.
Making a short film on a micro-budget

Producer AnneMarie Naughton and Director of Photography Kate McCullough will discuss their respective areas of expertise in this workshop concerning micro-budget short film-making. Topics covered will include funding, budgeting, pre-production, legal concerns and clearances, script and story, camera, lighting and equipment choices, efficient shooting procedures and post-production.
AnneMarie Naughton has over ten years experience in film as producer, executive and line producer of features, documentaries, television and shorts, and is the founder of Park Films, an award winning film production and digital media company. Her credits include The Fading Light (2008) Situations Vacant (2008) and Maeve Binchy's Tara Road (2005).
Kate McCullough's cinematography has won awards at the Apsen Film Festival 2006, with Hibernation (2005) and the Rhode Island Film Festival 2009, with Out of The Blue (2008). She is perhaps most well known for her work with Ken Wardrop on Undressing My Mother and His & Hers, the latter winning the World Cinema Cinematography for Documentary Award for at the Sundance Film Festival 2010.

Film is a constantly changing and complex industry both at home and abroad, and for film-makers at the beginning of their career, navigating the business side can be a daunting task. This workshop will advise on how to market, sell and exhibit short films, covering topics such as distribution, sales agents, film festivals, film markets and publicity.
Workshop leader Brendan McCarthy has worked as an independent producer and as a public funder, currently co-running the OSCARTM winning film production company Fantastic Films and acting as Film Adviser to An Chomhairle Ealaíon/ the Arts Council of Ireland. He has also been Head of Production and Development at Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ the Irish Film Board, involved in creating the Low Budget Initiative and the Micro Budget Digital / Development Fund.
Animation for Children Introducing children to the world of animation, these workshops explore different methods and cater for all ages.
Thaumatrope workshop

An easy way for young children to create their own basic animation. Pictures are drawn on each side of a card, and when spun on a thread, the pictures appear together.
Flipbook workshop

As explored by many, on the pages of school books! Children will create individual flipbook animations, finding out what kinds of motion and subjects work best.
Stop motion workshop
- Friday 26th and Saturday 27th
- 8-13
- 180 minutes - €20
Stop Motion is an excellent way for young people to learn about animation, and to let imaginations run riot. Individual models and set-ups will be created from clay, and the resulting films will be screened for the participants and their families on the last day of the festival.
