'Shared Journey': Three Exhibitions by Julie Collins & Derek John

Cork Film Centre, in association with National Sculpture Factory and Siamsa Tire Gallery, present 'Shared Journey: Ireland Projects 2010'

Julie Collins and Derek John's recent sculptural projects are based around the symbol / metaphor of the ship combined with mapping and landscape. The ship appears to be a symbol of universal cross cultural reference, bound with heritage, culture, migration, romanticism, survival and adventure. The 'Shared Journey' project aims to ask the question whether the knowledge of our shared heritage will provide us with a sense of shared responsibility in caring for our planet.

PROJECT 1: Seven Stories Civic Trust House, Cork, April 22-28, 9-5 daily

As the world experiences what seems to be an increase in natural disasters, should we begin to ask if they are natural or, indeed, unnatural?

PROJECT 2: Rescue Siamsa Tire, Tralee, April 24 - May 8

After every disaster, we look for rescue and redemption. Will the next generation need to save our planet? Are we giving them the skills to solve our problems?

PROJECT 3: Unnatural Disaster Bonded Warehouses, Port of Cork, Wed April 28, until 9 pm

Symbolically scaled to represent the world's population, model ships ranging in size from 4mt down to 10cm. The will be assembled in a random pile with with a large wax map of the world drpaed over it. The installation of this sculpture will be created as a performance piece and filmed as such. Selected artists are being asked to respond to the piece in collaboration with projections, photography and performance.
