Japanese Film Festival 2010

Cork [29 - 31 October] + Limerick / Galway / Dublin

The Japanese Film Festival returns to venues across Ireland in October and November 2010.

The Festival launches in Cork City, on Friday 29th October before touring to Limerick, Galway and Dublin throughout November. As in previous years it is co-organised by the Embassy of Japan, access>CINEMA and the Ireland Japan Association.

The 2009 Festival boasted sell-out screenings in all locations, indicating a clear demand for high quality Japanese cinema; the Japanese Film Festival hopes to satisfy this demand by bringing the best new Japanese films to Irish audiences for the third consecutive year.

Besides animation, there are relatively few Japanese films released into Irish cinemas; with this in mind the Festival aims to foster a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and society among Irish citizens and to strengthen the cultural ties between the two countries. There will be a number of special cultural events at certain venues – more information will be available closer to the time.

Highlights in the programme include the genre-bending Fish Story, which is set in five different time periods and incorporates such disparate subjects as punk music, plagiarism, and impending Armageddon, the classroom drama Confessions, which explores the dire consequence of unchecked bullying, and The Sky Crawlers (directed by Mamoru Oshii, whose Ghost in The Shell featured in last year’s Festival) which depicts a world where war has become a company sponsored reality game.

The Festival also offers a rare opportunity to see the invigorating Ping Pong, a modern classic of Japanese cinema, back on the big screen where it belongs.

Dates and locations are as follows:
29th - 31st October / University College Cork / The Cinemobile
1st - 2nd November / University of Limerick / Campus screening room
5th - 7th November / Galway / The Cinemobile (Waterside, beside the Courthouse)
12th - 14th November / Dublin / Cineworld
