Documentary Masterclass

A master class in documentary filmmaking with director Scott Hamilton Kennedy, on Sunday 27th June, 12.00-15.00 University College Cork

This master class taught by Academy Award nominated and internationally acclaimed filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy will cover the process of independent documentary production from start to finish. Appropriate for anyone from film student to amateur filmmaker to film aficionado, the course will touch upon the must-have qualities for a successful documentary, including conflict, theme, and characters. In three hours, Mr. Kennedy will discuss the steps involved in taking an original idea and making it into a successful documentary, including script, funding, pitching ideas, shooting/collecting elements necessary for the film, post production and distribution. This course is a unique, exciting opportunity not to be missed!

The master class will be followed by the screening of Scott Hamilton Kennedy’s The Garden.

Scott Hamilton Kennedy’s latest documentary, The Garden, was nominated for a 2009 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It tells the story of the South Central Community Garden in Los Angeles, the largest urban garden of its kind in the US. His debut documentary, OT: Our Town (2002), told the story of the staging of the first play in 20 years at Dominguez High School in Compton, California. He is currently working on a documentary entitled Fame High about the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Fame High follows five freshman and five seniors through a school year as they try to become successful actors, singers, dancers and musicians. Scott is also developing several narrative projects including an adaptation of The Garden. His feature script Up River, a coming of age action/adventure movie on the Los Angeles River, went through the highly competitive FIND Directors Lab, and was featured on the Black List.
